The Portland Axis & Allies Meetup is a group dedicated to enjoying the Axis & Allies and Gamemaster brand of strategy boardgames. There are currently six versions of Axis and Allies board games, all with their unique strengths and weaknesses, and a collectable miniatures game.
Axis & Allies Classic is the original version of the game, first produced in 1984. It spans the entire globe and encompasses the conflict of World War II. The classic game developed a loyal cult following that has led to the production of a series of games, including a revised edition of the classic that updated the rules based on feedback from the players and fans of the game. These improvements were then incorporated into a series of new boxed-set boardgames. The first was Axis & Allies: Europe, which focusses on the European Theater and uses streamlined rules and a detailed map/board to better model the historical setting of the conflict. Next came Axis & Allies: Pacific, which focusses on the Pacific Theater with it's unique set of tactical and strategic variables.
Flush with the success of these new versions and the continuing interest in the classic and revised editions, the Axis & Allies brand has continued to explore new territory. Axis & Allies: D-Day and Battle of the bulge take a more narrow tactical focus on those major battles of WWII, and the newest Axis & Allies: Guadalcanal explores tactical side of naval battles.
In addition to Axis & Allies games, this group also enjoys playing its sister games from Milton Bradleys Gamemaster series of boardgames. These include Shogun (a.k.a. Samurai Swords), set in fuedal Japan, Fortress America, set in an all too possible future for the U.S., and Conquest of the Empire, set in empirial rome.
Players choose which games they want to play at each meetup or using polls prior to the meetup. Games generally last between two and six hours. The game sets used to play the games are provided at each meetup, so owning the games is not a requirement if you want to try them out.
We hope you will consider joining us; details of meetup dates, times, and locations are given under "calendar" and "events."
